Help international students get back to work through the International Student Jobs Board

StudyPerth has developed an International Student Jobs Board to respond to the acute and specific needs for international students when it comes to finding employment. The purpose of the Board is to highlight employers who accept applications from international students, and provide the latest insights and essential advice for international student job seekers.

We all know people at local businesses (and you may even have employment opportunities that you would like to list!), so please spread the word and encourage your contacts to register as an employer so that we can help get international students back to work.

It's so easy to register:

Step 1: Register as an employer

Step 2: Post your vacancies

Available support for struggling international students

The relaxing of many restrictions and the opening up of the WA economy means that life for most international students in Perth is returning to normal, and they are enjoying the WA lifestyle and opportunities. However, some international students are still struggling, and we need your help to reach them.

We have recently received the results of comprehensive research into the physical and mental health of international students and there are some concerning statistics:

36% of students said that social isolation and loneliness affected their mental health while studying in Australia

30% of international students had been unable to pay for meals or food for some period since 1 March

14% of international students have been homeless for a period since 1 March (sleeping on campus, on a friend’s couch, in a car or on the streets)

As international students are unable to head home for the holiday period, we are asking for your help to let them know about the StudyPerth support initiatives, such as StudyPerth Crisis Relief, to support them during this time. If you could distribute this information to your student networks, we would be very grateful.

Buddy Program to help connect offshore and onshore students StudyPerth has created a Buddy Program within ProsPER for any offshore students to connect them with a local international student here in Perth. The Buddy Program will increase the connection between offshore students and those already in Perth so that the students are well informed about life in Perth by the time borders have re-opened.

How we are enhancing the international student experience

Given the challenges of the last few months, it is now more important than ever for international student connections to be made and maintained. To this end, we are working harder than ever to enhance the international student experience in Perth through a range of exciting student engagement activities and strategies.

In addition to recurring events held at the StudyPerth Student Hub such as employment workshops, casual catch-ups, yoga and walking tours, four new events were held in September: a budgeting workshop, 'all about Perth' trivia night, neck-and-shoulder massage sessions, and a workshop about getting a good night's sleep. Work continues on the Buddy Program and the ProsPER employability and job-readiness platform, as mentioned above. We have also recently cleaned our student database to ensure that relevant content is reaching students at the appropriate point of their student journey. This will be complemented in the coming months by a dedicated multi-step nurture campaign which will capture prospective international student interest and provide them with all the information they need to know about studying in Perth.

Finally, due to high demand, we have increased distribution of the student newsletter from once per month to twice, allowing for greater promotion of upcoming events and student deals, and provision of the latest relevant industry information.

From the Chief Executive Officer Over the past two years, StudyPerth has emphasised the importance of student Employability as part of the WA value proposition. However, operating the StudyPerth Crisis Relief Program has given us a real insight into the importance of Employment to international students and the support that can be provided via two of our major initiatives.

The first is ProsPER, StudyPerth’s online platform, which currently brings together a variety of modules for professional networking, orientation to Perth and employability but increasingly it will offer information and support for students looking for casual and part time employment, as well as wellness and wellbeing modules. If you want to help in a direct way, please share the StudyPerth International Student Jobs Board with any potential employers in your network and explain the value of international students in the workforce.

The second initiative is the StudyPerth International Student Hub, which opened last month, in the heart of the city. During this uncertain time, we are fortunate to be able to offer students a physical space to meet other students, community groups, business councils and employers – and an opportunity to join a community of innovative businesses and entrepreneurs. The Hub is also the venue for our comprehensive schedule of workshops and seminars, addressing wellness and wellbeing, financial management, as well as employment and employability.

We were delighted to welcome the Indian Society of Western Australia and their Student Wing to our Student Hub earlier this month to discuss how we could collaborate for the benefit of Indian and other South Asian students in Perth. We were able to offer the Student Hub as a base for Student Wing meetings and events and to offer ProsPER as the platform to host the selection, training and support of mentors and students.

We were also pleased to host at the Hub a meeting of Graduate Career Advisors. It was a very valuable opportunity to share our respective strategies, plans and initiatives and discuss ideas about how the services and opportunities available at the Hub could complement and support the great work that is already happening at the education institutions.

Inevitably, some StudyPerth initiatives were affected by COVID-19 and associated restrictions but, with the exception of the Airport Welcome Desk, all our onshore Action Plan initiatives have been reactivated for some time and we are able to honour our commitments to international students in WA.

StudyPerth has had several meetings with the WA Government in recent weeks and has reaffirmed its commitment to our partnership and the implementation of the WA Government International Education Strategy, through the StudyPerth Action Plan. The StudyPerth Chair recently received a letter from Premier Mark McGowan, acknowledging the role of StudyPerth in supporting the International Education sector and international students in Western Australia and asserting his commitment to partnering with StudyPerth to support the recovery and development of the sector in coming years.

Finally, I hope to see you at the StudyPerth International Education and Careers Expo, on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October from 10.00am - 3.00pm at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre (and online!) Please feel free to share the link with your international student networks – onshore and overseas!

Best wishes,

Phil Payne
