How to get involved this month!

Published 2 Jun 2020, 12:11 pm, by Lydia Gibson

Ronald McDonald House Charities WA are on the hunt for crowd pleasing recipes to feature in the first original RMHC WA Recipe Book.

These recipes will be used to provide inspiration to the 'Big Breakfast' and 'Lovin for the Oven' groups when the program start up once again.

Think breakfast, morning tea and lunch style treats that can be prepared within a commercial kitchen to be served to the families in the Nedlands House.

Simply send through your recipe along with a photo of your scrumptious meal to be published in the 2020 RMHC Recipe Book to careers@ecu.edu.au.

Wave your appreciation for volunteers

A big thank you from us, to you for, getting involved in National Volunteer Week 2020.

This year certainly looked a little different from what we have ever done before but the commitment and dedication from our ECU Vol-Squad members never wavered.

Check out the recording of our Live Q&A panel which featured Riley Dolman from one of favourite volunteer partners organisations Fair Game, ECU Careers Adviser Sara Moore, ECU volunteer Chrystina Acker and Volunteering WA’s Traci Gamblin.

The Baptistcare Aged Care Facility is also looking for some ECU student volunteers to be a part of their new, interactive virtual volunteering program. Volunteers will be connected with residents virtually to help them stay connected during isolation. If you’re a good listener and enjoy talking to seniors, this position is for you.

To participate all you’ll need is your own smart device or camera phone, a willingness to use Skype, Facetime of Zoom, and be able to commit half an hour, twice a week to speaking to residents.

Online orientation and training is provided by Baptistcare. You can learn more about the Baptistcare Virtual Volunteering Program here.

You can also explore more ways to give back and volunteer with ECU here. Complete your expression of interest to join ECU’s Volunteer Squad to stay in the loop about new volunteering opportunities through our fortnightly volunteering newsletter.

Help spread some small moments of joy to elderly citizens

Help ECU spread some small moments of joy to elderly citizens.

With limitations placed on visitors to aged-care centres, many residents are missing the social interaction provided by friends, family and volunteers. Outside visits can brighten the day of many residents and are something many look forward to.

We’ve partnered up with some inspiring aged-care providers to find ways to bring social interaction to their residents while in isolation. It’s the perfect, no-contact way to spread some warmth and give back.

Giving back old-school style

ECU has partnered with the Bethanie Care Group, Western Australia’s largest not-for-profit aged care and retirement village provider, to bring you the Senior Pen-Pal program. We are looking for volunteers eager to spread some cheer through the community by becoming a pen pal for a Bethanie Care resident. You can help by taking a few moments out of your day to write a letter to an elderly resident.

Make your letter reciprocal – share details about your life but make sure to also ask your pen pal about themselves.

You could share stories about your current studies, your pets, your siblings and your hobbies. Tell them how you are making the most of your time in isolation. Include drawings from your kids. Most importantly make sure you sign the end of your letter with your name to keep it personal.

You can either hand-write a letter and send us a photo or scan, or simply email us a letter, as well as any drawings and attachments to careers@ecu.edu.au and out Volunteer team will do the rest. Your letters will be received by residents across Bethanie Care aged facilities throughout Western Australia.

ECU Alumni Connecting Through Letters Program

ECU Alumni Connecting Through Letters Program

Get involved with the ECU Alumni Connecting Through Letters Program to help us spread some gratitude to former ECU staff. We want to thank some of former staff for their years of commitment to students and their dedication to ECU by sending some letters of thanks. You can get involved in this initiative and show your thanks to an ECU staff member while gaining valuable skills.

We’ll match you with a former staff member from your academic School that you’ll be able to check in with. This is also a great opportunity to gain some networking skills and ask valuable questions from someone with real experience in your field.

You can learn more about getting involved in the ECU Alumni Connecting Through Letters Program here or check out all the volunteering projects on CareerHub.
