ECU student Greta shares her volunterring experiences

Name: Greta
Studying: Bachelor of Science (Nursing)

I am currently volunteering as a Peer Mentor for international students in the virtual cafe that is held every Wednesday for international students, to reach out to international students studying at Edith Cowan University from all over the globe, and assist them during this COVID crisis, to ensure that they are well supported.

"I am also currently the co-President of the ECU Women's Community, a Guild Equity club that aims to provide a safe space for female-identifying students on and off-campus. My other volunteering roles include being a student representative for ECU, where I have roles of participating in discussions related to student matters, to ensure the best possible outcomes.

"Outside of university borders, I am currently working for Emily Hamilton, Member of Legislative Assembly for Joondalup, where I reach out to people within the community on behalf of her, to gather information and opinions of citizens and understand their needs.

"I like to volunteer because I am very fond of giving to the community. It is a nice way to spend my free time doing something constructive, and it helps me to obtain strong interpersonal skills. It resonates with my motives for ensuring equality and justice for individuals in various communities.”

“Volunteering at ECU is lovely, as it has given me the opportunity to further my community involvement and meet wonderful people. I love volunteering because I firmly believe in helping others and transforming all our environments better than we find them.

"Since arriving at ECU, I’ve been able to form strong relationships with those running the programs, other passionate volunteers, and the stakeholders we attempt to assist. As an international post-grad student, volunteering has allowed me to partake in the beautiful social aspect of ECU.

"I love seeing the smiles that volunteering brings to everyone’s face, including mine! Volunteering at just one event provides great opportunities to connect with others, further personal improvement, and form future possibilities.”

ECU volunteer Sugi

Name: Sugiyanto

Studying: Master of Communications

“My name is Sugi from Indonesia. I am doing a Master of Communications at Mt Lawley Campus. Since my arrival in Perth in mid-May 2019 I have been involved in various volunteering activities with ECU and other organisations in Perth.

Prior to the commencement of Semester 1 2020, I took part in the orientation weeks at ECU. I found this opportunity extremely rewarding, because I can share my experience with new students and be able to help introduce them to the campus, the facilities, and the resources they can access.

I would have never been where I am now without the help of others and I feel obliged to give back to the community. It is through volunteering that I can do so.”

“I love volunteering! My volunteering journey started off early on in my degree and I’ve came across so many amazing humans ever since.

"You meet people from all around the world who all have their own unique story to tell. Some may say volunteering is another building block for your resume, but I think it’s so much more than that. It’s about helping others become the best that they can be.

"I’ve realised how powerful it is and how much you learn and grow from each and every experience – personally and professionally.

If you’re considering volunteering at ECU, just do it – there’s never a dull moment as an ECU volunteer.”
