The Tokyo City University Volunteer Program is back for 2017!

Published 22 Sep 2016, 10:15 am, by Katherine Valvasori

If you enjoy meeting new people, making friends, gaining new experiences and have great communication skills, then this is the program for you!

As part of an ongoing partnership with ECU, students from Tokyo City University will travel to Perth to complete a semester of study. To assist these students, we are looking for dedicated and reliable ECU students to act as buddies during their stay.

Volunteering as a buddy gives you the opportunity to make new friends, create inter-cultural networks, communicate across cultures, experience working in a team and gain vital employability skills which you can take with you when you graduate.

Based on the Mount Lawley campus, your main role will be to offer support, friendship and encouragement to up to six TCU students during their studies at ECU. You’ll also assist the students with orientation activities, engaging in organised social events, and providing insight into Australian cultures and customs.

To apply all you need is to have studied for at least one calendar year at ECU and have an interest in learning about new cultures and helping your peers. You don’t have to speak Japanese, but it is preferable to know some of the language and have an appreciation of the culture. The program will run from 10 February to 16 June 2017.

If you’d like to know more, there will be an information session on:

Tuesday 18 October at 12-1pm at the Mount Lawley Campus in room 3.211.

If you would like to be involved please complete the TCU Volunteer Expression of Interest Form found here by Friday 11 November and return it to the Program Officer, Deborah Geddes d.geddes@ecu.edu.au, along with any questions you have about the program.

ECU's Run For It (a race for civilians...and monsters)

Published 21 Sep 2016, 4:21 pm, by Katherine Valvasori

We are seeking current students to volunteer for our upcoming fun run event, ECU’s Run For It on Saturday, 29 October 2016 at the Joondalup Campus.

Depending on your role, volunteer hours are between 2.30pm to 9.00pm and we need your help to scare and startle! Become a ghost or goblin or a creepy clown. We are seeking volunteer actors, makeup artists and theming specialists.

ECU’s Run For It will commence at twilight with a 2km Halloweenies Hunt before the sun goes down for children and families. When darkness falls, the Creepy Campus 5km starts, where participants can expect strange and deranged characters to terrify them along the way. It’s a fun, yet terrifying experience to share with friends and family.

Not only will this event be a fun night for all, but it’s also for a great cause! All entry fees will go towards the ground-breaking work of the ECU Melanoma Research team.

To volunteer all you will need to do is attending a briefing session at Joondalup on Wednesday 19th October from 2pm.
Please register your availability today.

Published 1 Aug 2016, 3:08 pm, by Holly Johnsen

If you’ve ever wondered how to make your job application stand out from the crowd, volunteering is a great way to build your employability skills, aid with networking, gain new experiences and do something great for your community! According to the Volunteering Australia report, sustained volunteering is associated with better mental health and 26.3% of 18-24 year olds in WA participate already!

National Student Volunteer Week (NSVW) raises awareness and the importance of student volunteering. This year, the ECU Careers and Leadership Team are running events every day of NSVW including a round table discussion, volunteer power hours across all ECU campuses and a tree planting day! Running from August 8-14, you’ll be able to find out about the benefits volunteering can have on finding employment once you graduate and what you can do in your community.

Here’s all the events you can find on campus at ECU:

August 8 – Donation drive for Homeless Connect WA

August 9 – South West Volunteer Power Hour, 11am to 2pm inside the Campus Library

August 10 – Mount Lawley Volunteer Power Hour, 11am to 2pm outside Grindhouse Cafe

August 11 – Joondalup Volunteer Power Hour, 11am to 2pm just outside Student Central, Ground Floor

August 12 – Panel Discussion (registrations essential)

August 13 – Tree Planting Day at Lake Claremont (volunteers needed!)

August 14 – Mount Lawley Open Day at ECU! (FULL – try for next year!)

We’re also looking for some special volunteers to help out with activities for the week including the tree planting day at Lake Claremont and the donation drive for Homeless Connect WA. If you think you’d be the perfect volunteer, get in touch with the Careers team today.
